Variations on a Theme by William Carlos Williams
I took
your teddy bear.
It wants to cuddle.
If you
want it back
So you come
to me
and get it.
Sorry for stealing your teddy bear.

I have stolen your Pokemon cards
I am sorry, they were good cards

Variations on a Theme by William Carlos Williams
Please forgive me. I simply
Sorry about your ball,
do not know what I am
doing. I cried.
And which you probably
don't care. You were holding
on to it. I let it slip through
my fingers. It fell so fast,
and deep.
Forgive me, I'll hold on
tighter next time. I don't
want it to be like last year
all over again.
Sorry about your ball,
going down the well,
again.
-Erica Lei

I ate your cake that you had
been saving to eat next year.
I ate the frosting off the
cake and gave the rest to a
platypus.
Forgive me I did not know
what I was doing.
-Nancy Yu

I have swallowed the burgers whole. The spray of strawberry milkshake was satisfying.
When you came back form the bathroom it had vanished.
Forgive me. I also ate the fries and they were all satisfying.

Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I think it's pretty good. I like the stories about Enrique and how he gets to the U.S. I don't like when sometimes the book talks about someone else instead of Enrique because it is kinda boring. I do not like how it is written because it talks about Enrique and gives some other facts, then it confuses me. I don't really like to read books and I guess it's different because I've never read about someone's life. I think when Enrique is about to cross the border he's gonna get caught, then he'll have to start all over again." -Nancy Yu
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I didn't enjoy the beginning of the book when he talks about how much he misses his mother. I thought it was important, but it just wasn't interesting to read about. I got interested in the book when he actually goes on his journey. He talks about how he has to survive and hide from the officers, and it was interesting to read about how he actually survives the journey. The way the book is written is kinda confusing. The narrator talks about Enrique as a third person and that makes me feel like the story isn't true. I think that it it was written like a personal story it would seem more real and I would get more interested about the story. I think that when Enrique reaches Nuevo Laredo that he will make it past and reach the United States." -Lisa Li
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I like how that author puts Enrique's life's details in a story. But I dislike the storyline. I personally don't like this kind of book. I like the way it is written. It's different from other books I've read because it's a true story and it's very sad and real. When Enrique reaches Nuevo Laredo I think he will get into the U.S. but there will be obstacles in his way." -Lily Law
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"What I like so far is that the story brings something, like a catch to get readers reading, like say you can't story reading because it's really good and you want to know what happens next. What I dislike are the Spanish words. Once you keep reading it, you might forget what that word was and what it means and that you can't memorize it when you're reading. It's different from other books because it is a book about something else, telling people about Enrique's life, his beginning to the end of the story, saying how life will change and stuff like that. I think Enrique will hide and probably la migra or gangsters will find him and steal his things." -Rosanne Liu
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I think Enrique's Journey is very interesting, but it is not one of my favorite books. I think it skips around too much. I have never read a book about so much violence before. I think he is going to cross the border, but he is going to get beat up." -Steven Ngai
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I like it so far because I know how hard it is to leave your family and their journey in America. It is very sad." -Peter Khalil
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I think the story is interesting. I like how the book is saying how he got caught & tries again. I don't like how it is written with some Spanish words. It's different from other books because it's like a surprise. You don't know how far Enrique goes. I think Enrique will get to the U.S. but get caught and be sent back." -Christina Kung
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I think that Enrique's story is good because there's a lot of action going on that's very interesting. What I don't like about the book is that sometimes it gets a little boring, but I still like it and I have trouble with some hard reading words. I like how it is written in English and Spanish because I like Spanish a lot- it was my first language. I think now that Enrique reached Nuevo Laredo he will get through because maybe someone will help him or he'll figure out something." - Carla Gómez
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I really enjoy the story. I like how it is so dramatic and it gives so man details. I like the way it is written because it has so many details. It is different from other books because I have never read a story about an immigrant. I think that Enrique will survive and find his mom." -Anthony Amaya-Lopez
"I like the book so far, it is really interesting. I like the way it is written. There is a lot of detail about Enrique's journey. This book is based on a true story and I've never read a book based on a true story. I think Enrique will get caught and sent back to Honduras." -Tracy Yu
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"It's interesting and very thrilling. I like it so far, and I can't wait to read more. I like how the book is based on a true story but it's so adventurous and dangerous that it's hard to believe. It's very skeptical, but knowing that it is all true makes you realize how messed up the world really is. It's different from other books I've read before. I normally do not read nonfiction because I always thought it would be boring. Reading "Enrique's Journey" proved me wrong. Since we're only 1/3 in the book, I doubt Enrique will make it through. I do believe in happy endings so I believe after a few tries, he'll reunite with his mother." - Donna Wang
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I don't really like this book. I like reading about how immigrant reach from town to town to town and what they've gone through. I really dislike how they write the towns' names in Spanish because I can't remember which town is which. I sort of liked the way it is written, because it is fun but filled with information at the same time. It's different from other books I've read because it includes the perspectives from a lot of people. I think Enrique will try to reach the U.S. now that he's so close. But we are only 1/3 of the way there, so there's going to be some unexpected things too." -Wendy Yu
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I don't like the story because the journalist involves too many details and gets off topic. The journalist incldes too much unimportant information and other books don't go off topic. I predict Enrique is going to get caught and has to restart his journey. But I hope he doesn't." -Danny Wong
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I like Enrique's Journey so far. It is very interesting. There is a lot of action in it. I dislike it when Enrique has to go back to Honduras and then he goes back to the U.S. It's just back and forther but Enrique always has been learning about how to get to the U.S. I predict that in the end Enrique will find his mom and live a happy life." -Cameron Li
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I like the book. I like how it tells you what happens in Honduras. I like how the book is written. It is different from other books because it is about what happens in another world. I think Enrique will make 3 or 4 more attempts and then finally he will make it to the U.S." -Hadiyah Bey
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I like the book pretty good so far, but I wish I could be an adventurer and explore new places. I dislike the parts of the book that keep talking about other people and not Enrique. I don't like the long detour. It is different because other books don't contain interviews. I think that Enrique will secretly pass the border and find his mom." -Kevin Li
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"To me, it is boring. I don't like what the book is about because I already know about crossing borders. The way it is written is okay. It is different because I usually read action books. I think Enrique will get caught." -Sean Khorn
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"It's a great, good storyline. The way it is written is quite easy to read. It isn't different form other books in any type of way. Enrique's luck will turn good, but maybe he'll get sent back." -Anderson Ha
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I like the book Enrique's Journey because it shows people's struggles in the book. It is different from other books I've read because I haven't read a book about crossing borders. I predict that at the end he will find his mom." -Angelica Hooker-Huerta
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"It's okay. I am not going to lie but I'm not much of a reading person. I like how this book is inspirational, but I don't like how this book includes people that don't belong and they just go on about them. About the way it is written? Well, I would say that in my opinion [the author] should stay focused on Enrique more. It's different from other books I've read because I've actually never read a book about an immigrant, but it is inspiring. I think that Enrique will find his mother but when he finds his mother he will convince his mother to come back home." - Breanna Martin
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"I like the book because when I get bored I like to read a new book. It's different because it has some Spanish words. I think Enrique will cross over the wall but sometime he will be found."
-Mario Martinez
Midway Book Blurb for Enrique's Journey
"It's pretty good but I'm way behind on my reading. I don't really dislike the book, I just think it's kinda sad, and I do like how it is written. I guess the topic is different from other books I've read." - Gabby Mena
Bouncy Blue Ball (Simile Poem)
What is a bouncy ball?
It is stretchy like gum.
It is squishy like a jellyfish.
It is rubbery like a rubberband.
It is blue like water.
It's bouncy like a jumper.
It's flamable like gas.
It's a circle shaped like a tire.
It moves like a human
It's round like the world.
It's light like an empty small box.

The I Am Poem
I am a dreamer but it's not a dream
if you work at it, it's a powerful desire.
I wonder about my future. Will it be good or bad?
I hear the whistling wind that smacks the window.
I see myself at a French cafe listening to the busker and the people throwing change in his guitar case.
I want to leave this place to explore and find a better lifestyle.
I am a dreamer but it's not a dream
if you work at it, it's a powerful desire.
I pretend I'm at that place.
I feel the blowing air in my face
whispering in my ear saying go, go, go...
I touch the blank piece of paper ready for me to write my stories.
I worry if I can't fulfill my dreams,
but I think I can do it.
I cry of happiness, how my dream wipes me off my feet.
I am a dreamer but it's not a dream
if you work at it, it's a powerful desire.
I understand the risks I have to take
and the people I have to leave behind.
I say my dreams are bulletproof,
but I don't know that unless I give it a try.
I dream about being back in Europe where my ancestors lived
and as a Marine Biologists and also surrounded by people like me.
I push myself as hard as I can.
I hope to see myself the way I want my future self to be,
my dream.
I am a dreamer but it's not a dream
if you work hard at it, it's a powerful desire.

I Am Poem
I am intelligent.
I wonder what I am gonna be in the future.
I hear a lot of noise in my house.
I see people crying.
I want no summer school.
I am intelligent.
I pretend I am a superhero.
I feel very good.
I touch things.
I worry that I might get bad grades.
I cry about failing.
I am intelligent.
I understand that people never get what they want.
I say that peace should happen in the world.
I dream about nothing.
I try to get good grades in school.
I hope there is a world in 2010.
I am intelligent.

A Simple Poem
What are my glasses like?
It is made from metal,
Like a fancy new car.
They are dirty,
Like pigs in mud.
They have glass,
As in car windows.
They are rough,
As in sand paper.
They are blue,
Like my pencil.
They hang on my ear,
Like a woman wearing earrings.
They are scratched,
As in a cat scratching a wall.
By Kevin Li
Simile Poem
My volleyball beads are red just like Angelina's soccer ball.
It is also bumby just like pimples on your forehead.
My volleyball beads are noisy like marbles.
They taste like metal.
We put them around your neck like a scarf.
They cam from my couch.
The only thing I use them for is luck. They're lucky like a lucky charm.

I Am Poem
I am athletic & nice
I wonder who's going to win the World Cup
I hear a soccer referee's whistle blow
I see a Nintendo Wii in my bedroom
I want pizza every day
I am athletic & nice

I feel my hat
I touch my pen
I worry that I can't finish my homework
I cry when people die

I understand how to play soccer
I say hi
I dream about a pizza doing yoga
I try not to get on the computer
I hope that war ends
I am athletic & nice.

My Green Frog (Simile Poem)
My green frog has a happy face on it, like a child when receiving a shiny prize.
He has two eyes.
Shiny as a pearl, but dark like coal.
My green frog is green, but it has dark spots on him like a cow.
He has long, droopy hand and legs like cooked noodles.
When squeezed, he feels as soft as a marshmallow.
At the same time he's as fuzzy as a dog's ear.
His friendly smile makes me feel like a little bird who just learned to to fly.
His dark mesmerizing eyes makes me feel like I'm trapped on a never ending road.
He makes me feel like gold.
By Wendy Yu
The "I am" Poem
I am cautious of what's around me
I wonder what death feels like
I hear crickets in the middle of the night
I see moonlight through my window
I want to explore the world
I am cautious of what's around me
I pretend I am a famous person
I feel my particles of dust in the air
I touch my thoughts to place them within the emotions
I worry about how many more people will die
I cry when my feelings get hurt
I am cautious of what's around me
I say you can be whatever you want if you trust yourself
I dream that Michael Jackson never died
I try to be nice to everybody
I hope I will have a fun first day of high school
I am cautious of what's around me

I dream that life never ends
I try to spread happiness
I hope people would understand
I am thoughtful and kind

I Am Poem
I am afraid and deeply in fear.
I wonder about disasters I cannot bear.
I hear the sounds of scary haunts.
I see ghosts that spook and taunt.
I want to step into the dragon's lair
but I am afraid and deeply in fear.
I pretend I am alright and there's nothing to see
but I feel tiny bugs crawling inside me.
I touch my heart filled with grief.
I worry about the trees without a single leaf.
I cry when I am alone and really, really scared
because I am afraid and deeply in fear.
I understand that I need to STOP.
I say I am not afraid to skedaddle or rot.
I dream that one day I will reach the stars.
I try to take my talents really, really far.
I hope that I will not be scared
Yet I am still afraid and deeply in fear.
By Raymond Wong

I touch myself.
I worry about friends.
I cry at sad movies.

I Am Poem
I am shy
I wonder if I would ever achieve my goals in the future
I hear my mom's cooking every morning
I see a city covered with fog, though not everyday
I want my life to be successful
I am shy
I pretend to listen to someone talking
I feel the things that I tough with
I touch the paper and pencil that I'm writing with now
I worry if something goes wrong
I cry when I feel left out
I am shy
I understand things don't go the way it's supposed to be
I say that everyone has rights to certain things
I dream of my future goals
I try my best at everything
I hope things would happen to what I suspect
I am shy

Simile Poem
It sparkles and shines
like a lake 'gainst the sun
Green like a lime,
or a stoplight on it's run.
It has two white knobs
to turn and twist
It controls the screen
as if magic exists.
And out comes black lines
like a moving snake!
With this, creativity will flow
like water from a hose.
Like a blank canvas
about to explode.
Compact and small
like a phone in a pocket
The kids will bawl
when they realize they don't have it.
So you can badger and pester,
"What can this item be?"
I can't wait for you further,
It's my etch-a-sketch, you see?
By Donna Wang
Eye Drops
My eyedrops are wet like a rainfall,
Plastic like an action figure.
Cold like a snowstorm,
Or a blizzard.
Bitter like an expired walnut.
My eyedrops are tiny like an elf.
My eyedrops are round like the sun.
My eyedrops are bottles like a jar of frogs.
By Danny Wong
Simile Poem

And rubber like an eraser?
This is what describes my glasses.

Simile Poem
The spade is the strongest card.
It is like a parent over their kids.
The King, Queen, and Jack show great teamwork,
It is like a father and mother with their son.
5 cards can make a flush
and 5 males make an all-male line.
Cards can be used in unique ways.

Simile Poem
A measuring tape is soft like hair
And silky as a baby's behind.
It is expandable like a rubberband
It is reusable as a rubber duck
It is as useful as a can
Portable as a train
Flexible as transformers.

The Trophy
The trophy sits in the dark room
The trophy is tall like the Twin Towers
The trophy is smooth like silk
The trophy is shiny like a diamond
The trophy is glossy like freshly applied lipstick
The trophy's ribbon is soft like foam
The trophy is cold like ice
The trophy is fragile as a heart...

Simile Poem: Dark Chocolate
It is hard like a math problem.
Brown like mud. Bitter as your words.
It's as sweet as your smile,
that will take me to the Nile.
Light like cotton candy,
but comes in very handy.
It's as square as Spongebob,
that sucks up a mob.
By Lily Law
Simile Poem
Home Run!

Le-go USB
Hey we need a lego piece!
Well I don't have one.
As you can see, a metal part as shiny as a knife inside!
It is rubbery like a rubberband.
It's red as a big fire truck.
It may look like a Lego, as if you can build something with it.
Too bad it's a Lego USB.

Simile Poem
An orange...
Can be sweet as chocolate,
Or sour like lemon.
It can be bright like the sun,
Or as dull as an unsharpened pencil.
It can be round like a ball,
Or oddly shaped like broccoli.
The skin can be hard like glass,
Or as mushy as oatmeal.
By Lisa Li
Simile Poem
What is the key to happiness?
Is it how bouncy a child jumps on the bed?
Or is it red, white and blue like the American flag?
Does the aroma of an eraser fill your nose?
Maybe the scratcher of a ball represent the burns
on my arms.
The roundness of the ball is like baby's toes.
The smooth spherical object is important to my life
like a mother is to her son.
What is the key to happiness you might say?
A Molten Super Touch volleyball.
